Brainstorm October Activities
Each unit begins with seasonal changes and traditional holidays. October is very simple in that case. However, do not forget the academics while decorating your classroom into a tiny bat cave or a witch house.
Unit topics for October are traditionally connected with autumn, pumpkin, and Halloween. Depending on your cultural views on these themes you may play them around in your lesson plans. In my personal experience, the main topics for this month are season of autumn, harvesting, storing crops, and cooking.
The topics for science and social studies are coming out right away: weather changes, leaves change color, part of leaves, farming, vegetables, farm animals, how forest animals get ready for winter, types of pumpkins, pumpkin scoop experiment, sour-sweet experiment, pumpkin food, traditions of Halloween, trick or treat, costumes, jack-o-lantern, bats, witches and ghosts, etc.
Once you have brainstormed your ideas for the unit, now you can combine them with the main academic work such as reading, alphabet letters, numerals, shapes, measurements, and art. Depending on the age you are working with, you need to prepare related songs and musical games. Put all your findings into a grid and BOOM! Here you are! The October unit is ready to meet parents and you are ready to teach and entertain your children.
If Halloween falls on Monday,
then think over your November unit a week before!
