Curriculum is “a course, especially a fixed course of study at a college, university, or school,” in 1824 the word was transferred from classical Latin language which had meaning as “running”.
Educational curriculum is a plan of monthly units, topics by subjects, reading lists, daily activities, and lesson plans. Curriculum is usually consists of 10 theme-based units that address children microcosm, cultural background, cultural holidays, major historic events, and academic subjects.
Each unit should follow the Common Core Educational Standards and include English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Music, and physical activities to promote healthy intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of the children.
- Daily whole group instructions promote social skill development and socially appropriate norms of behavior: politeness, respect of others, empathy toward others;
- Daily small group activities promote language development, independence, and self-control;
- Balance of nurturing: playtime and learning throughout the day enhance the development of self-confidence, self-esteem, and curiosity toward learning;
- Daily activities should be focused on individual children’s needs and their interests;
- Classroom centers such as ELA, science, math, library, building blocks, dramatic play aim to enrich children’s development through play and interactions with peers and teachers.
